How to Change a Flat Tire

Pull over in a Safe Location

The first thing you need to do is pull over somewhere safe. Park in an area as far away from moving traffic as possible. Find a place that is visible to moving traffic to avoid accidents.

Turn on your Hazard Lights and Park

The hazard lights will allow other drivers to see you and keep their distance. Be sure to engage your parking brake so that your vehicle doesn’t move.

Loosen the Lug Nuts

For vehicles with wheel covers, pry the covers off. With your wrench, loosen the lug nuts by about half a turn.

Jack up your Car

Place your jack beneath the frame of the vehicle; this is the metal portion underneath your vehicle. Use your jack to raise your vehicle and make sure it is always standing flat on the ground.

Remove the Lug Nuts

Loosen all the lug nuts in an alternating pattern without removing them. Once they are all loose, you can now take them out.

Replace your Tire

Remove your flat tire and set it aside. Mount your spare tire and take care to align the tire’s holes to the screws. Once the tire is set, put the lug nuts back on and tighten them in an alternating pattern.

Lower the Vehicle and Tighten the Lug Nuts

Lower your vehicle until all its weight is on the ground. Tighten the lug nuts a little more and then you’re done.
